East China Province Spends More on Water Conservancy
HANGZHOU, February 20 (Xinhua) -- By the end of last year, east China's Zhejiang Province had invested nine billion yuan (one billion U.S. dollars) in construction for water conservancy projects, ten percent more than that for the previous year. This has meant large water conservancy projects have progressed smoothly.
The province's largest water conservancy project, which began 1996 in Wenzhou City, was completed last year.
The project is helping provide nearly 67,000 hectares of farmland with better irrigation. It has also increased the province's yearly power generation capacity by 355 million kilowatts.
Zhejiang has also improved its ability to control floods as by the end of last year it had added new dikes along 700 kilometers of urban rivers.
In addition, the provincial water conservancy works puts a high priority on the control of water pollution. Local residents are now supplied with drinking water of higher quality than previously.
