WTO Coordination Office for Chongqing

CHONGQING, January 30 (Xinhua) -- Chongqing Municipality in southwest China has recently invited tenders for setting up the World Trade Organization Coordination Office in the city.

After a three-hour debate, the Southwest China University of Political Sciences and Law and the Chongqing Municipal Federation of Social Sciences were the successful bidders.

This was the first public bidding to be held in Chongqing for the establishment of a WTO organization.

The office is set up to make the local economy compatible with global economic practices, expand the city's economic and trade cooperation with areas outside China, and promote the economic growth of Chongqing and surrounding areas, said Wang Jiguang, an official in the Municipal WTO Work Leading Group.

China's entry into the WTO requires a change from a planned economy to a market economy. Other WTO matters will also be handled by the coordination office, he added.

Li Yueyin, another government official said, the survival of the coordination office depends on its service. He said the office should work with its counterparts in other Chinese provinces and with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.
