Yunnan Reaps Ninth Successive Grain Harvest
KUNMING, January 28 (Xinhua) -- Yunnan Province, one of the leading grain producers in western China, harvested 14.86 million tons of grain in 2001, according to recent rural economic research. This was the ninth grain harvest in Yunnan since 1993, despite severe natural disasters and plagues of insects.
A provincial agricultural official attributed the successful grain harvest to the popularization of modern agro-techniques, the development of new and fine crop strains and cooperation with other countries.
Endowed with rich resources and a mild climate, Yunnan has great potential for farm produce, an agricultural expert said.
The harvest of beans rose 23.9 percent and fine wheat strains have been popularized in the province.
Yunnan's major crops are rice, maize, wheat, tuber crops, peas and beans, rape seed, peanuts, tobacco, tea, cotton, sugar-cane, and fruit.
