Guangdong's Annual GDP Tops 1 Trillion Yuan

GUANGZHOU, January 23 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangdong Province reported 1.06 trillion yuan (about 120 billion U.S. dollars) in gross domestic product (GDP) in 2001, 9.5 percent higher than that of the previous year.

As the first domestic province with a trillion-yuan GDP, Guangdong scored an economic growth rate 2.2 percentage point higher than that of the whole country.

Last year, the province realized a state tax revenue of 155 billion yuan (about 19 billion U.S. dollars), accounting for 14.8 percent of China's total, according to local statistics.

Due to the industrial restructuring, the service industries in Guangdong have developed rapidly, with the telecommunication sector, especially mobile communications and the Internet, advancing rapidly.

Statistics show that Guangdong's service sector recorded an added value of 425 billion yuan (about 51 billion U.S. dollars) last year, 10.3 percent higher than the previous year.

The province also invested 355 billion yuan (about 43 billion U. S. dollars) in fixed assets last year, up 10.6 percent above 2000, according to the statistics.

In addition, the province's retail sales of consumer goods stood at 452 billion yuan (about 54 billion U.S. dollars) in 2001, 10.9 percent higher than the previous year.
